July 2009, DENVER, CO - Project C.U.R.E., MillerCoors, and over 1,800 guests and dignataries welcomed Her Excellency Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, the First Lady of Ghana to Denver's Hyatt Regency, for a fundraiser event to raise awareness of global healthcare needs and support the delivery of life-saving medical supplies and equipment to medical professionals and patients under care in Ghana (1).
Mrs. Naadu Mills spoke about the need for medical supplies in her country and about her efforts to support the work of her husband, the president of Ghana, His Excellency John Atta Mills. Improving maternal and child health is part of a strategy "to transform Ghana into a middle-income country. The problem is always with children," she said, referring to stagnant conditions in rural parts of Ghana. "If they are born without problems, it makes things easier for them," she said at the First Ladies' Luncheon (2).
The annual event, sponsored by MillerCoors, benefitted Project C.U.R.E. (the Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment), the Denver-based organization that collects and sends over 94 containers of medical supplies, $50 million worth, a year to hospitals in about 120 countries.
Project CURE exceeded its fundraising goal for the event. Enough money was raised at the luncheon to fund the delivery of more than $2 Million in medical relief to people in need in Ghana. A Ghana-bound container packed with about $400,000 of donated medical supplies left Wednesday. Newmont Mining sponsored the first container. Four more are slated to move using funds raised at the luncheon. Newmont runs a gold mine in Ghana that employs more than 500 workers (2).
In attendance were the event honorary co-chairs first lady of Colorado Jeannie Ritter, Susan Kiely of MillerCoors, former first lady of Colorado Frances Owens and former first lady of Denver Wilma Webb. Anne Trujillo, news anchor for Denver's Channel 7, will emcee the event.
Representing the Consular Chamber of Commerce were its president emeritus Jonathan Warren, its Board Chair, the Honorary Cosul of Chile Paulina Biggs Sparkuhl, and board member, the Honorary Vice Consul of Guatemala Dr. Aldo A. Aguirre. Also present in related activities were Colorado Consular Corps members, the Honorary Consul of Sweden Donald Glenn Peterson, the Honorary Consul of Thailand Donald W. Ringsby, and the Honorary Consul of Denmark Nanna Nielsen Smith.

Consul of Chile in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Hon. Paulina Biggs Sparkuhl. "There was a true spirit of giving and caring permeating all of the activities related to the visit of Her Excellency Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, First Lady of Ghana. The Consular Chamber is very eager to help Project C.U.R.E. reach more countries in need of medical supplies and equipment. In fact, I will personally address the request from the organization's Founder, Dr. James W. Jackson, to get more involved in their global outreach efforts," said Biggs Sparkuhl.

They are both great champions for humanitarian aid to developing nations. The world is a much better place because of the caring people at Project C.U.R.E. who translate good intentions into actual deeds. May God continue to bless their work and service," stated the Honorary Vice Consul of Guatemala, Dr. Aldo A. Aguirre.
The Project C.U.R.E. First Ladies' Luncheon is an annual fundraising event featuring first ladies from around the world. Project C.U.R.E. welcomed Senora Ana Ligia de Saca, the first lady of El Salvador, for the inaugural First Ladies' Luncheon in Denver in 2006, during which more than $70,000 was raised to deliver medical relief to El Salvador.
In 2008, Mrs. Margarita Zavala, the first lady of Mexico, was the keynote speaker at the second-annual First Ladies' Luncheon in Denver, where she helped to raise $150,000 to deliver more than $2.5 million in medical relief to the Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco.
Project C.U.R.E. also hosted first lady of Belize Ms. Kim Simplis for the inaugural First Ladies' Luncheon in Phoenix, Ariz. Nearly 900 people attended the event in November of 2008, at which enough money was raised to deliver nearly $2 million in medical relief to people in need in Belize.
